Why This Book?
Our purpose is in writing this book is to share our 38 years of business experience in dentistry. Graduating from Loyola Dental School in Chicago in 1970, I had a lot of confidence and started on my own in a university town of 40,000 with over 50 dentists. I relied on several good friends to steer me in the right direction for business success and I am grateful to them.
Along the way, I stumbled many times in between moments of success. In those low moments, I wondered, “why didn’t they teach us this in dental school?” Why didn’t they warn us to avoid this tunnel which has no cheese?
What I know now is the mandate of the dental school is to teach the student in four years to pass the state dental board. There is no time for business courses. Being successful in business is not the job of the professional schools. Their job is to teach the skills and science behind the skills. This holds true for medicine and veterinary practice, also. Understanding that, it seems important that we share with the profession the lessons I have learned.
I have always been fascinated with business and I find dentistry to have a simple structure. However, there are some very important elements which can cause even the most brilliant science student to stumble.
- Dentists work with a small team of people who need to share a common vision (a struggle to make that happen but magic when it does)
- Dentists are full time players and do not have the luxury of full time leadership, reading, thinking and conferencing with others
- Dentistry has encouraged a quiet perfectionist personality to enter the ranks. These are not natural cheerleaders. This is, however, changing as dental students arrive with previous careers and experiences plus, there are more right brained women.
- Dentists can feel frustrated with business and numbers as they really enjoy the doing-ness of dentistry
Thus, I want to share with you my enthusiasm, passion and depth of concern to help keep good dentists in the game and to encourage men and women who are thinking about serving in this way to march forth with confidence and goals.
You have noticed, too, change is happening so rapidly, the curve is accelerating. The classics remain yet, with technology advances doubling every three years and faster, we need new thinking. Einstein said, “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking that we used when we created the problem.”
My goal is to bring new thinking to the classics.
We wanted this to be a very motivating read for Doctors and teams. Grab the ideas and run with it.
